He went on to captain the “Endeavour”, a converted coastal collier a mere 100 feet long and a crew of 94, with which he
- Circumnavigated the globe between 1768 and 1771
- Observed the transit of Venus in Tahiti
- (Re) Discovered New Zealand and accurately mapped the coastline
- Became the first European to discover the east coast of Australia
Murdered by Americans* in 1779.
*Hawaiians then, actually, but they’re Americans these days….
