“There was something about him…

HT Ralph Steadman

…Something really fucked up. Something fucked up and amazing. We need more people like him.”

Comment on a quote from aspensnowmassshrines.com

“While running for Sheriff in 1970, Hunter S. Thompson shaved his head so that he could call the conservative, crew-cut wearing incumbent his “long haired opponent.””

Command sinistral pedestral to writhe…

The Washington Post ran a Style Invitational contest, asking readers to submit “instructions” for something (anything), but written in the style of a famous person. The winning entry was The Hokey Pokey (as written by William Shakespeare).

Tea for two.

Or twenty, for that matter.

Holds 5 litres, held by potter Doug Fitch.

Bought it here, he made it here, picked it up here.

Did I think it was this big?
No

Does it detract from my enjoyment of it?
Not a bit.

Quite the opposite, in fact.

Welbeck Game

The Welbeck Farm Shop next to the Harley Gallery (and the Dukes Gardening Centre, who cheerfully informed me that they had no customer service staff working so they couldn’t help me when I asked for Corydalis plants, but that’s another story…)  in Nottinghamshire sells artisan meats, cheeses, beer and wine.

Artisan everything, actually.

They’ve even branched out into entertainment with the Welbeck Game, which they unaccountably store in a freezer.

I asked one of the staff if they had a rulebook for sale. For the Welbeck Game. No point in buying it if you don’t know how to play it, is there?

Oh.

Hares. Venison. Rabbit.

That sort of game…

The more things change…..

….the more they stay the same.George Best was an exquisitely talented football (soccer) player  for Manchester United and Northern Ireland in the 1960s and 1970s.

A seriously flawed and easily influenced personality, he was once quoted as saying “I spent 90% of my money on women, drink and fast cars. The rest I wasted”

The “Observer” published these images taken immediately after a match in either 1969 or 1970 – I remember reading the article and it stayed with me – to show the physical punishment dealt out to players that a defender couldn’t stop by any other means.

They just kicked them to bits. Especially George Best.

At 1:27 in the video. And at 3:48. And at…

A lesser player would have fallen and taken the free kick.

Not George Best…
