Local interest

Put “Kiwi” or “Nelson” on the cover of a book and it’ll sell like hotcakes around here.

(“Can I have my money back, please? This book’s all about South AFRICA, not NELSON…”)

Poetry in “The Listener”

Tony Jackson is my cousin Shirley’s husband.

He wasn’t joking.

This was the 360˚ view from the top of what used to be their garden.

What he doesn’t say is that

a) the hillside stopped at his backdoor, with a massive poplar resting gently against his roof.
b) they’ve been living in motels for 2 months…

There’s coffee. And then there’s COFFEE….

Take:

An untenanted ex-upmarketprelovedclothes shop in a part of town that’s on the verge of becoming funky
Basic (as in cardboard cartons for stools, doors as tables) furnishings
Top end espresso machine and grinder
Blends of coffee that you’ll still be tasting next day
2 guys -Sebastian and Paul – who love coffee and talk about it with authority and enthusiasm

and you’ve got Kaffeekommune’s pop-up cafe in the Gaustrasse.

Same principle as Intelligentsia, the Mecca for coffee geeks. Just as good.

Opened last Saturday, runs until 11 March.

Go there.

It’s worth it just for the exquisite tiles on the floor.

(What of course pisses me off IMMENSELY is that we’ll miss all but 2 days of it….
