This is not a music collection…..

1010792_540869645973679_58185397_nYears ago, I flew to Miami on Lauda Air* next to a guy called Fritz Egner who had a TV program on the national networks.

(Called “Dingsda” – Thingamabob and  they got really young kids to explain a word or phrase. Here’s a typical one for the Teletubbies)

I laways thought he was a bit of a wet, but he was anything but and we hit it off like a house on fire.

Anyway, he used to be a journalist/DJ at a radio station in Munich and he told me that when he moved apartments, he had to employ a structural engineer to assess the load bearing capability of the new floor…

* Cousin Dave (who provided the image) strikes again.

After I related the story, he asked “Do you have to shout on Louder Air then…?”

Told him to sod off…

This is a con……

If you want to fly Air New Zealand from San Francisco to Auckland in mid February i.e. after the school holidays have finished, you’ll find some great deals.

They even say so themselves.Screen Shot 2014-01-08 at 13.56.33

Try and select a seat, though, and it’s not such a pleasant experience.

This is what their seat map looks like:

Screen Shot 2014-01-07 at 18.14.54 Screen Shot 2014-01-07 at 18.15.16Screen Shot 2014-01-07 at 18.15.49The seats with a figure are occupied. Fair enough.

The greyed-out seats are “Unavailable”

No idea what that means – Air NZ hasn’t bothered to answer my request for clarification

If you want to sit together with your travel partner, you’ll need to cough up another $50 each for a “Preferred” seat.

Screen Shot 2014-01-07 at 18.16.10Which MAY include (so they say…) benefits such as

“Extra Legroom”…er…no, you’ve got the same seat pitch as all the others.

Or Better Location On The Aircraft” …er…no, you’re stuck in the middle of the rest of the passengers.

Or right at the back next to the toilets and with restricted seat recline.

I’ve worked out what they’re doing:

The flight isn’t nearly full – they’ve got the maximum number of seats on display for sale.  And they wouldn’t be offering $845 seats if they were going to be full anyway.

What they’re doing is trickle-feeding the number of reservable seats to force couples or families to pay a premium for a normal (in some cases – crappy…) seat.

Once they’ve done that, they release a few more “Preferred” seats and pull the same trick all over again.

This stinks…..

And Australia won…..

On the 9th of August, 1796, a cricket match was played by eleven Greenwich pensioners with one leg, against eleven with one arm, for one thousand guineas, at the new cricket ground, Montpelier gardens, Walworth. At nine o’clock the men arrived in three Greenwich stages; about twelve the wickets were pitched, and they commenced. Those with but one leg had the first innings, and got 93 runs; those with but one arm got but 42 runs during their innings. The one-leg commenced their second innings, and six were bowled out after they had got 60 runs; so that they left off one hundred and eleven more than those with one arm. Next morning the match was played out; and the men with one leg beat the one-arms by one hundred and three runs. After the match was finished the eleven one-legged men ran a sweep-stakes of one hundred yards distance for twenty guineas, and the three had first prizes.2014-01-05-eccentric-cricket-1
