Rage, rage against the dying of the light

New Zealand is a small nation.

The 6 degrees of separation that apply to the rest of the world are reduced to 2 here.

I was talking to a friend last week and we agreed that probably everyone in the country knew someone (or knew someone who knew someone) who was touched by the Erebus disaster of 1979. (The Nav Officer who entered the incorrect coordinates was a family friend, David knew someone more directly affected)

When your 8000-strong Defence Force loses 5 soldiers attached to the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Afghanistan within a matter of weeks, the pain is palpable.

Don’t worry, there isn’t ………

Police in Essex investigating reports of a lion being spotted in a field have called off the search.

The animal was seen near Earl Hall Drive in St Osyth, near Clacton-on-Sea, by holidaymaker Bob Martin at about 19:00 BST on Sunday.

Mr Martin said he and his wife Denise saw a large cat and a lion “was the first thing that came to mind”.

Police officers decided to call off the search on Monday after no trace of a big cat was found.

A police spokesman said: “We believe what was seen on Sunday evening was either a large domestic cat or a wildcat.

I blame the Industrial Revolution

Either that or globalization.

Probably a combination of both.

Let’s go back to the 19th century.

Unskilled folk left school at an early age and worked 7 days a week (6 with a Sundays off for church if they were REALLY lucky) at jobs that PRODUCED stuff.

Farm labourers for food, factory workers for things.

Fast forward to now and what have we got?

Manufacturing’s anywhere but where WE are in a race to the bottom cost-wise and food is produced (and wasted – 60% in the USA goes to the dumpster-divers) in massive quantities by very few people.

And the rest?

Service jobs.

Employing people with little or no aptitude or skill-sets for what they’re doing.

That’s the way it was in well over half the interactions today.

And especially the idiot at the front desk of the Marriott Courtyard in Long Beach who barely looked up from his computer screen to give me blatantly incorrect information.

I’m not calling for a return to the satanic mills and their ilk, but a 70 hour week in a button factory would soon sort him out.

Keep him out of my way, anyway….
